A championship performance in Portland

Our team in Oregon kept athletics fans up to date with all the action at the IAAF World Indoor Championships

It’s no co-incidence that our IAAF app hit the hotspot on the App Store home page during the recent World Indoor Championships. At the same time a team of five Haymarket Networkers were over in Portland, Oregon, frantically satisfying athletics fans’ demand for the latest action and results as they supported the IAAF’s official website, app and social media for the event that ran from 17-20 March.

Tom Byrne, Michelle Sammet, Andrew Macharg, Ashoor Namrood and Wendy Southern jetted off to the Pacific Northeast to cover the build up as well as the competition. Back in Teddington Gareth Raw and Iustinian Tomegea from Haymarket’s Internet Operations team were pulling shifts to provide the site with operational support.

This was the IAAF’s first World Athletic Series event since Lord Sebastian Coe took over as president, and all four evening sessions at the Oregon Convention Center were sell-outs, with a combined attendance figure of nearly 40,000.

“During the past four days, we have experienced indoor athletics at its finest at the IAAF World Indoor Championships Portland 2016,” commented IAAF President Sebastian Coe. “Top-class entertainment, innovatively presented with light and sound effects, from the introduction of athletes in the stadium to the medal ceremonies in the heart of city centre.

“We were thrilled by some outstanding performances. The four action-packed days produced 10 world-leading marks, with two championship, seven area and more than 40 national records set in the Oregon Convention Center.

“Indoor athletics offers an intimate experience for sports fans who are separated by no more than a few feet from the athletes in competition. The capacity crowds this week have shown that indoor athletics delivers a great show when well packaged.”
